PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain a powdery hydrophilic polymer while controlling a particle size by supplying a water-soluble unsaturated monomer to a powder bed in the presence of a polymerization initiator and an inert auxiliary soln. while regulating the same by a nozzle and distilling the inert auxiliary soln. to polymerize the monomer while discharging polymerization heat.
CONSTITUTION: When a water-soluble monoethylenic unsaturated monomer is held to a powder state within a powder bed in the presence of a polymerization initiator and an inert auxiliary soln. and the auxiliary soln. is distilled off to discharge polymerization heat and a reaction mixture is polymerized under stirring, the soln. of the monomer in the inert auxiliary soln. is divided into fine droplets by an inert gas by using the multiple component nozzle immersed in the powder bed to be polymerized and the particle size of the formed powder polymer is controlled by changing the amt. of the inert gas to obtain the objective powdery hydrophilic polymer while controlling a particle size. The amt. of the inert gas necessary for finely dividing the monomer soln. is desirably 10-100 l per liter of the monomer soln.
