PURPOSE: To smooth any start to the backward side even in time of trouble in a forward-backward selector means by installing a first target gear ratio regulating means which regulates the maximum value of a target gear ratio to the smaller value as far as the specified one than the maximum value of such a gear ratio as being settable by a gear ratio altering means.
CONSTITUTION: The maximum value RTOmax of a target gear ratio RTO is set to a gear ratio being smaller as far as the specified value than the maximum gear ratio RNGLmax being settable by a gear ratio altering means 220, and shift control is started from this maximum target gear ratio RTOLmax. If a backward movement is carried out at the gear ratio at the forward side at a time when a forward-backward selector means 21 fails to operate due to something trouble and so on, the gear ratio is shifted to the high side from the low side where its value is large, but since the maximum target gear ratio RTOLmax starting the shift control is set to the high side being smaller as far as the specified value, when the backward movement is carried out at the gear ratio at the forward side, the gear ratio is set to be larger as far as the specified value. Therefore, even when the forward-backward selector means 210 has gone wrong, it is smoothly startable to the backward side.
