To provide a controller which reduces the load on a control aspect when an engine is started in a vehicle stop state, in a drive unit for a vehicle equipped with a differential part functioning as an electric differential gear and a power transmission part provided in a power transmission path from the differential part to a driving wheel.

When the engine 8 is started in the vehicle stop state wherein a "P" position is selected, a vehicle stop time control means 106 controls engagement operation for a clutch C and a brake B to place the power transmission path in an automatic change gear part 20 temporarily in a power transmission state and also controls a first electric motor rotating speed NM1to increase an engine rotating speed NEabove a startable rotating speed NES, so a third element mechanically has reaction torque and then the engine rotating speed NEis increased above the startable rotating speed NESonly by rotation control over a first electric motor M1 through differential operation of a differential part 11, thereby reducing the load on the control aspect.
