PURPOSE: To voluntarily control characteristics in the case where a river is used as a canoe course, by a method wherein two or more variable weirs in height, which are apart in the direction of a flow, are provided on the bed of the river and a magnitude of a hydraulic jump part formed between the weirs is controlled by varying depths of water above the weirs or a distance between the weirs corresponding to flow speeds of the water above the weirs.
CONSTITUTION: An area crossing the midway part of an artificial river or a natural river 10 is set up and a plurality of piston and cylinder mechanisms 14 are laid inside an artificial bed 12 for the river provided in this area. Weir structures 16 to be protuberantly driven in the water by the piston and cylinder mechanisms 14 are placed on the river bed 12. A plurality of the piston and cylinder mechanisms 14 including columns 26 are arranged on the river bed 12 in matrix form and the columns 26 are provided closely neighbouring with each other and are composed so as to enable their projecting from the river bed 12, in the state of their standing-up. The piston and cylinder mechanisms 14 are controllably driven by a controller 44 and a protuberant figure of the weir structures 16 is determined by allowing a plurality of the columns 26 to protrude on the basis of a fixed pattern.
