Abstract:

PURPOSE: To form a converter by forming oxide whisker on a cold-worked surface by heating a foil which has irregular and cold-worked surface by means of metal peeling in an oxygen-containing gas and providing a coating layer of a specific composition thereon.

CONSTITUTION: A ferritic stainless steel alloy foil which has irregular and severely cold-worked surface by means of metal peeling is formed. The foil formed by means of metal peeling is heated in a gaseous atmosphere containing oxygen to form oxide whiskers on the cold-worked surface at dense spaces. Then, a coating layer containing an alumina material is formed on the surface covered with the oxide whiskers to obtain a foil useful for a converter used for high temp. treatment of automobile exhaust gas. The foil is made of the ferritic stainless steel alloy comprising 15 to 25 wt.% Cr, 3 to 6 wt.% Al 0.3 to 1.0 wt.% Y, if desired, and the balance Fe.
