Abstract:
PURPOSE: To not alter redundant data and eliminate the need to regenerate the redundant data by storing a storage means with new logical constitution of plural storage devices including extended storage devices after previously initializing all the extended storage devices to 0 or 1.
CONSTITUTION: A data block 41-4 of a magnetic disk device 4-4 is a parity block, which stores parity data of data blocks 41-1 to 41-3 before extension and parity data of the data blocks 41-1 to 41-3 and 41-5 after extension. Even parity 01101001 is stored as the head bytes of the data blocks 41-1 to 41-3. When a magnetic disk device 4-5 is extended, the magnetic disk device 4-5 is initialized to 0, so the contents of the data block 41-5 are all 0. Parity of none of the data blocks 41-1 to 41-3 and 41-5 changes and the data block 41-4 as the parity data block need not be updated.
