To provide a (co)polymer based on vinyl units which has a specified structure and high light intensity, can be used for providing an electroluminescence device having a wide range of color tone, and can be optimized with respect to the form of a polymer layer and electrical properties.
This (co)polymer comprises at least one repeating chain unit represented by formula I or II (wherein R1 and R2 each represent H or a 1-6C alkyl; and L1 and L2 each represent a chromophore residue, such as coumarin or pyrene) and optionally a repeating unit represented by formula III (wherein R3 represents R1; and M represents phenyl, naphthyl or the like), wherein the content of the unit I and/or the content of the unit II each are 0.5 to 100 (mol.)% based on 100% (co)polymer and the content of the unit III is 0 to 99.5% based on 100% (co)polymer. The (co)polymer is obtd., e.g. by reacting 4/5-(N-methyl-N- hydroxyethyl)amino1,8-napthalene-1',2'-benzimidazole with methacryloyl chloride to obtain an acrylic acid deriv. represented by formula IV which provides the unit II, and then reacting the compd. with N-vinylcarbazole which provides the unit III.
