To obtain a functional-amine-group-containing latex by emulsion- polymerizing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer with N-vinylformamide and hydrolyzing the water-insoluble N-vinylformamide polymer particles with an acid.
A water-insoluble monomer system containing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer desirably vinyl acetate and optionally another ethylenically unsaturated monomer and N-vinylformamide is emulsion-polymerized to form a copolymer. The copolymer is brought into contact with an acid under conditions in which the amide units can be converted into amine groups to hydrolyze the polymer containing units of polymerized N-vinyl-formamide and to thereby produce a functional-amine-group-containing latex. According to the above process, amine parts can be incorporated in the water-insoluble polymer without previously adding a diamine to the latex and therefore undesirable side reactions can be prevented.
