To provide a manufacturing method of a cordierite honeycomb structure, capable of expanding the average pore diameter and reducing the coefficient of thermal expansion, the cordierite honeycomb structure obtained thereby, and a talc used therefor.
The manufacturing method of the cordierite honeycomb structure comprises a mixing step mixing the talc, kaolin and alumina that serve as raw materials for forming cordierite to obtain a ceramic raw material, a molding step of subjecting the ceramic raw material to extrusion molding to mold a honeycomb molded product, a cutting step of cutting the honeycomb molded product into a prescribed length, a drying step of drying the honeycomb molded product and a baking step of baking the honeycomb molded product to obtain the honeycomb structure. In the mixing step, the talc used as the raw material of cordierite has an IgLoss (loss on ignition) of 5.7-6.5 wt.%, determined by heating at 1,000°C for 2 hr.
