PURPOSE: To shorten time for elevator maintenance and eliminate such danger ous and complex work as requires workers to enter an elevator pit by automat ing counter clearance measurement.

CONSTITUTION: A counter clearance measuring device is provided with an elevator car 1, a balance weight 2 which is connected to the elevator car 1 through a wire rope 4, a cam 8 and detection section 9 which detect the position of the balance weight 2 when the elevator car 1 is positioned at the highest floor, and an elevator control computer 10 which converts and calculates the output value of the detection section 9 based on the measured value of the counter clearance between the balance weight 2 and a damper 6 at the time of initial setting and outputs actual counter clearance.
