To provide a crosslinked cellulose ether which is excellent in salt resistance, has tackiness and biodegradability, and can be obtained at a low cost, its manufacturing method, and a water-absorptive base material made by using it.
The method for manufacturing the crosslinked cellulose ether comprises reacting a cellulose with an etherifying agent to replace the hydrogen atoms of the hydroxy groups of the cellulose by an alkyl group and/or a hydroxyalkyl group, and allowing the cellulose to crosslink by using a polyglycidyl ether as a crosslinking agent in substantially the same reaction step. By subjecting the cellulose ether to a crosslinking reaction with a polyglycidyl ether, a water-absorptive base material can be obtained which maintains high water absorbency and has tackiness even when a salt water is used .
