To obtain a new compound useful as a discotic liquid crystal material, capable of providing an electrolyte together with a metal salt and controlling the liquid crystalline phase and liquid crystal transition temperature of its own by mixing the compound with other (non)liquid crystal compound(s).
This compound is a compound of formula I [R1 to R4 are each H or R5OCH2 and at least two of R1 to R4 are each R5OCH2 (R5 is H or a 1-25C alkyl and at least one CH2 of the alkyl may be substituted with O, CO, CH=CH, C≡C, epoxy or the like)], e.g. 2,3,11,12-bis[4'(5')- hydroxymethylbenzo]-18-crown-6. The compound of formula I is produced, for example, by etherifying a crown ether derivative of formula II (R11 to R14 are each H or HOCH2 and at least two of R11 to R14 are each HOCH2) as intermediate with a compound of the formula R5X (X is a halogen).
