PURPOSE: To determine the cutting length taking the losses by mending into consideration and improve yield by detecting the positions and sizes of flaws of the steel material from the video signal of an industrial TV camera then detecting the depths of the flaws.
CONSTITUTION: The video signal of a slab 1 by an industrial television camera 4 is applied to an analytical unit 5, by which the presence or not of any flaw and its size are inspected and the information thereof is transmitted to a computer 6. Then, the computer 6 calculates the moving time of the flaw of the slab 1 from the flaw detection position to the position of a flaw detection probe 7 and emits a timing signal to a controller 8. The flaw-detection probe 7 performs the flaw detection of the slab 1 in response to the timing signal. When it sends the detection signal to a flaw detector 8, it determines the depth of the flaw and sends a signal to the computer 6. Then, the computer 6 calculates the billet cutting length taking the losses by mending into consideration from the information on the position, size and depth of the flaw and the set information from a casting apparatus and commands a cutting timing signal to a cutting torch control machine 10. Then, said machine operates and controls a cutting torch 11 in response to the timing signal, thereby cutting the slab 1.
