Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting tool made of cubic crystal boron nitride based ultrahigh pressure sintered material excellent in chipping resistance in cutting processing of steel or cast iron.SOLUTION: A cutting tool made of cubic crystal boron nitride based ultrahigh pressure sintered material has a content ratio of cubic crystal boron nitride particles of 50 to 85 vol%, favorably 70 to 85 vol% and has the residue essentially comprising aluminum oxide. Therein, when performing measurement with respect to a cross-section of the cubic crystal boron nitride based ultrahigh pressure sintered material, a ratio of the total area occupied by a cubic crystal boron nitride particle group having an area larger than 2.5 times of the average area of the cubic crystal boron nitride particles which can be calculated from the average particle size of the cubic crystal boron nitride particles is set to be larger than 0.1 of the total area of the cubic crystal boron nitride particles and to be 0.35 or less of the total area of the cubic crystal boron nitride particles and, thereby, the chipping resistance is improved.
