To provide a cycloolefin addition polymer that is easily produced industrially, and has excellent gas permeability, heat stability and mechanical strengths, and to provide a method for producing the polymer.
The cycloolefin addition polymer is produced by addition-polymerizing a compound of formula (1), or the compound of formula (1) and a compound of formula (2) using a catalyst (A) and co-catalyst (B), wherein a ratio of structural unit derived from formula (1) occupied in the polymer is 35-100 mol%, and Mn is 200,000-1,000,000. The catalyst (A) is a transition metal complex represented by formula (3): MLnK1xK2yK3z (3), (wherein M is Ni or Pd, L is a cyclopentadienyl ligand, K1, K2 and K3 are a negative ligand, or a neutral ligand, n is 1-3, x, y and z are 0-7, and x+y+z is 0-7). The co-catalyst (B) is at least one selected from among: (a) an organic Al compound; (b) an ionic compound which can react with the catalyst (A) to form a cationic transition metal compound; and (c) a compound which promotes dissociation of the ligand of the catalyst (A).
