To provide a method for dampening a lithographic printing plate indirectly without generating a broke and a ghost as well as a dampening device.
A rotating lithographic printing plate 1 is dampened by an inking roller 2 which indirectly dampens the plate 1 and a connecting roller 3 which comes into contact with the inking roller 2 and with which a dampening water applying roller 4 for moistening the lithographic printing plate 1 comes into contact. During dampening the roller 4 rotates at a different peripheral velocity from the peripheral velocity of the lithographic printing plate 1. The dampening water applying roller 4 is movable by an adjusting device from an isolated position to a contact position 4.2 where the roller 4 comes into contact with the connecting roller 3. In addition, a first dampening device roller 5 can be driven through engagement by a rotary driver and comes into contact with the dampening water applying roller 4 when the roller 4 is set at the contact position 4.2.
