To increase the reading speed of a history file at the time of using a hierarchical storage management(HSM) function.
This data management system is provided with a central processing part 3 having a 1st main storage device 3c allowing data to be read out/written from/in itself and a central arithme-tic unit 3b and 1st and 2nd auxiliary storage devices 2, 4 allow-ing data to be read out/written and having data reading/writing speed slower than that of the 1st main storage device 3c. An application for providing an HSM function to the arithmetic unit 3b is previously stored in the device 4 and a history file storing the addresses of all files stored in the devices 2, 4 and the reading, writing and rewriting history of all the files is previously stored in the device 3c.
