Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems of pseudo-synchronism or synchronism caused by the erroneous detection of a synchronizing code in an encoding apparatus.
SOLUTION: The decoding apparatus has an input decoding apparatus 800 which includes a multiplexed code stream multiplexing a plurality of kinds of variable length codes generated by compression-encoding the image signal, and outputs a synchronizing code detecting signal 803 at a plurality of periodically predetermined synchronizing code inserting positions in an input code string 205' to which stuffing bits of 8 bits or low is inserted; a demultiplexer 811 for generating variable length codes 841 and 842 by demultiplexing the multiplexed code string 801 in the input code stream with a position indicated by the synchronizing code detecting signal 803 as a reference; and variable length decoders 806 and 810 for outputting a reproduced image signal by decoding the variable length codes 841 and 842.
