PURPOSE: To enhance activity of dehydrogenation reaction of methanol of a catalyst by forming the catalyst by fixing alkali metal ions and/or alkaline earth metal ions to a high silica zeolite substituted by boron.
CONSTITUTION: A high silica zeolite substituted by B is suspended in an aq. soln. contg. alkali metal ions and/or alkaline earth metal ions, and the metal ions are fixed by refluxing said suspension for several hours-several days at 90-120°C. Thus, a dehydrogenation catalyst is obtd. Suitable high silica zeolite substituted by B is one having 5-1000 atomic ratio of Si/B. Formaldehyde is produced by carrying out a dehydrogenation reaction of methanol in the gaseous phase in the presence of the obtd. dehydrogenation catalyst. Suitable reaction temp. therefor is usually 400-850°C, pref. 500-750°C.
