To depolymerize a polyamide without producing waste stream as far as possible, with high selectivity of the polyamide to the corresponding monomer components, by using a specific amount of a catalyst in the presence of an aliphatic alcohol.
A polyamide is depolymerized in the presence of 1-100 wt.% (pref. 1-20 wt.%, esp. 1-10 wt.%), based on the polyamide, of an aliphatic alcohol (monohydric alcohol such as methanol or ethanol, or polyhydric alcohol such as ethylene glycol or propylene glycol) and ≤50 wt.% of water using ≤40 mol.%, (pref. 5-30 mol.%, esp. 10-20 mol.%) of a catalyst (e.g. phosphoric acid, phosphorous acid polyphosphortc acid, BORIC ACID sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid) at 180°C to the critical temperature of the alcohol (pref. 200-350°C).
