To obtain the subject depressant that suppress the cerebral necrosis caused by apoptosis, can ameliorate the survival rate of cerebral neurocytes at cerebral ischemia and can attain the brain protection by using ebselen and its analogous compounds as an active ingredient.
This depressant comprises a compound of formula I or formula II (R1 and R2 are each H, a halogen, trifluoromethyl, nitro, a 1-6C alkyl or alkoxy or the like; R3 is an aryl, an aromatic heterocyclic ring group, a 5-7- membered cycloalkyl or the like; R4 is H, hydroxyl group, -S-glutathione or the like; R5 is H, a 1-6C alkyl; Y is O or S; n is 0-6; Se may be oxidized) as an active ingredient. In a preferred embodiment, for example, 2-phenyl-1,2- benzoisoselenazole-3(2H)-one is employed. The daily dose of this compound is, for example, 0.05-5,000 mg in oral administration/adult.
