Abstract:

To measure accurately the depth of a thermally or mechanically damaged part of a rolling or by rolling, and thereby to optimize always a grinding quantity of the roll.

A rolling roll with a thermal or mechanical damage on the surface by rolling is rotated, and simultaneously a surface wave probe is brought into contact with the surface of the rolling roll through a film of contact medium. A surface wave is propagated from the surface wave probe, and a reflected wave from a thermally or mechanically damaged part existing or remaining on the surface of the rolling roll is received, and its frequency is measured, and the depth of the thermally or mechanically damaged part is measured based thereon.
