Abstract:
PURPOSE:To guarantee high-speed processing and to prevent the deterioration of a reproduced image by separating a color image signal into a bit of brightness information and a bit of chrominance information that have less correlation with each other, and effectively quantizing the brightness information in vector. CONSTITUTION:A color converter 12 separates inputted RGB signals into the brightness information 13 and the chrominance information 14 that have less correlation with each other. An encoder 15 calculates a mean value which is the DC component of the brightness block of the brightness information 13, and a standard deviation which is a bit of contrast information, also, codes the AC component of the brightness block into a primary code, and further, quantizes the primary code into a secondary code by means of vector- quantization. As a result, a multi-level image data can be highly efficiently coded without deteriorating the quality of a reproduced image.
