To prevent a stall, even when wheels are locked before a transmission with infinite gear ratio completes a gear shift to a neutral position through quick braking.
When a gear ratio reaches a rotation synchronizing point by braking (a brake switch 47 is turned on) at an instant t1 and a command to switch from a direct connection mode to a power circulating mode is generated, a high clutch is made to be released, but a low clutch is prevented from engaging. The transmission is brought to neutral position by prohibiting engagement of the low clutch as well as switching the high clutch from engagement to releasing for preventing engine stall due to gear shift lag to the neutral position, even if the wheels are locked at braking. During this time, a target CVT gear ratio icvto is controlled, such that the relative rotation of the low clutch becomes zero. These controls are completed, when the state becomes accelerator pedal stepped state (after an instant t3) to open a throttle opening TVO. Then the low clutch is allowed to be engaged for preventing re-engagement shock of the low clutch, since the relative rotation of the low clutch becomes zero.
