A device for detecting the loop of the steel between rolling mills, with which a linear or bar-like steel 21 is rolled by passing through a plurality of rolling mills 10 which are continuously arranged, is composed of a detecting bar 12 to one end of which a metal plate 30 is fixed and a proximity switch 32. The detecting bar 12 one end part of which is mounted freely rotatably in the vertical direction by taking it as a fulcrum and the other end part is arranged in the state orthogonal to the passing line of the steel 21 on the steel 21 between the rolling mills 10. The metal plate 30 is fixed to the tip than the fulcrum of the detecting bar 12. The proximity switch 32 is arranged so as to be turned ON when the metal plate 30 which is present usually in a position away from the proximity switch 32 approaches within a certain distance by ascent of the other end part of the detecting bar 12.
