To detect persons near an elevator door rapidly and accurately even if the door is not touched.
A device for detecting person standing in front of an elevator door is provided with a heat detecting element group 4a formed with multiple pyroelectric type thin film heat detecting elements (hereafter referred to as heat detecting elements), an infrared ray transmitting lens, and a control part which controls the opening and closing of an elevator door 2 using an output signal produced by the infrared ray injected into the heat detecting element group 4a through the infrared ray transmitting lens. Also the heat detecting element group 4a is provided on the upper part of an elevator cage 1, and the injection field of view of the infrared ray into the heat detecting element group 4a is located near the elevator door 2 when the elevator door 2 is opened. In addition, each heat detecting element of the heat detecting element group 4a is provided at different field of view so as to detect persons near the elevator door 2 more extensively and securely.
