To provide a device for improving accuracy of identification of a segment of a multisegment filter rod, capable of controlling a cutting device.
A linear beam of a laser light source 22 is directed to be a spot or a fan-shape on the surface of a filter rod 20 so that, at the incident side of the light, the light vertically gets into the filter rod as a spot. In the filter rod body 20, the light conically spreads from the incident point, thereby, at the outgoing side, the light spreads in a range of A'-B' outgoing points by diffusion. In the outgoing side, an imaging device containing an aperture 16 is formed by using a lens 26 to minimize the effects of the aperture angle on a light receiving optical system. Thereby, the device and a method for inspecting the filter rod by letting in only the light on a short line I-II on the surface of the filter rod 20 through the rod onto the light receiving layer of a sensor 14 are provided.
