To provide the device and method for editing history management and display of a text editor which enables an inserted text and a deleted text to be discriminated by colors on a text editing screen and also make it possible to understand the history order from variation in color tone by managing the contents and history order of a text inserted or deleted in text editing operation.

The text editor 1 has an input means 2 which receives user's key input from a keyboard 6, a text display means 3 which displays a text being edited on a color display 7 together with its editing history, a text editing means 4 which controls a current image 9 and a history management table 10 in a main storage 8, and a file input/output means 5 which inputs an edited text to a disk unit 11 from a file and outputs it to the file.
