To provide a liquid crystal display device in which a color filter is eliminated from a conventional liquid crystal display device to reduce the cost of the parts and the efficiency of the light utilization is greatly improved and to provide a liquid crystal display method.
A red color light source 1a, a green color light source 1b and a blue color light source 1c are not simultaneously lighted, rather, they are independently and cyclically lighted in the order of red to green to blue, for example. Red color light beams emitted from the light source 1a, which is turned on for 1/180 of a second, repeat reflection inside a light transmission plate 2, and are emitted from the top surface of the plate 2 as uniform red color light beams. Only the light beams having polarized in a certain direction by a polarization plate 3a are selected, pass a glass substrate 4a and made incident on a liquid crystal section 7. The red color light beams passed the section 7, pass red pixels 5R provided between a black matrix 6, emitted through a glass substrate 4b and a polarization plate 3b and display a red color picture on an optical emitting surface. Similarly, green and blue color light beams are emitted to display a picture.
