PURPOSE: To prevent the explosive combustion of a fuel and the red heating of the tip of a burner for the prevention of the short life of the burner by stopping the feeding of a combustion-improving gas and feeding a purge gas, while the combustion burner for producing glass fine particles is returned from a glass deposition-finished point to a glass deposition- starting point.
CONSTITUTION: Two combustion burners 3, 3 for producing glass fine particles are disposed around a target member 1, and a combustion gas, a combustion-improving gas, a glass raw material gas, an inert gas (e.g. Ar), and a purge gas (e.g. nitrogen gas) are fed. When the burner is transferred from the position A to the position B in a process wherein the burners are repeatedly transferred in a route of A-B-C-D, a valve 6 is opened, and a valve 7 is closed to feed the combustion gas, the combustion-improving gas, the raw glass material and the inert gas are fed into a chamber 5 to produce fine glass particles in the flame thereof, bonding and depositing the glass fine particles onto the periphery of the member 1. When one of the burners reaches the position B, the flow rate of the combustion gas is reduced and the valves 6 and 7 are closed and opened, respectively, to feed a purge gas into a chamber 5, followed by taking out the burner from the chamber 5 and moving downward to a position C. When the burner reaches a left end D, the burner is inserted into the chamber 5, and the flow rate of the combustion gas is increased. The valves 7 and 6 are closed and opened, respectively, and the burner is again transferred from the point A to the point B. When the deposited layer 2 reaches a prescribed thickness, the operation is finished, and the product is subjected to thermal treatment in a high temperature oven to provide a glass matrix.
