To remove scratches and other defects from the surface of a photographic material by composing the device of an application device which applies a wax composition to the surface of a moving photographic web and a buffing device which buffs the web surface applied with the wax composition.

A wax applicator rotates in the reverse direction to the web 23 and gives maximum shearing of wax when the wax is applied and a buffing roll 18 also rotates in the reverse direction to the web 23 and gives the maximum shearing of the wax when the web is buffed. The web is supported by two idler rollers, i.e., one roller below a wax application roller cover 11 and the other roller below a buffing roller 18. In the respective cases, the idlers have two purposes, i.e., apply sufficient back pressure to a means supporting the web and the web 23 when the web 23 is conveyed through the device to bring the wax applicator roll cover 11 and buffing roller into proper contact with each other.
