Abstract:
To provide a novel diacetylene derivative in which the birefringence and the dielectric anisotropy are comparatively large and which is chemically stable.SOLUTION: A diacetylene derivative of this invention is chemically and thermally stable because it includes a diacetylene skeleton in the central part of the molecular structure. Further, structures of both terminal groups of the diacetylene derivative are different from each other in such a way that in the structure a sulfur atom is included only in one terminal group and no sulfur atom is included in the other terminal group. As a result, the diacetylene derivative has high birefringence originating from the sulfur atom, and moreover, can exhibit mesomorphism in the vicinity of room temperature corresponding to the structure.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
