To provide a diesel engine and a control method for the diesel engine achieving improvement of a state of exhaust gas, improvement of fuel economy, and reduction of combustion noise of the engine due to stabilization of premixed compression ignition combustion, and expanding a premixed combustion operation area by setting compression ratio of a cylinder, an injection hole diameter of a fuel injection nozzle, and swirl ratio in a range suitable for premixed compression ignition combustion.
In the diesel engine including a control device controlling operation with an engine operation range divided into a normal combustion operation zone V2 in which normal combustion of combustion in the cylinder of the engine is done and a premixed combustion operation zone V1 in which premixed compression ignition combustion is done, compression ratio of the cylinder is set to a range of 15.5-16.5, injection hole diameter of a fuel injection nozzle is set to a range of 0.090-0.120 mm, and a variable swirl system is provided.
