Abstract:
NEW MATERIAL: A compd. represented by formula (R1 and R2 are each a 1-15C alkyl or alkenyl and CH2 in these groups may be substituted by -O-, -CO-, etc.; A1-A3 are each a trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, a 1,4-phenylene, a 1,4-cyclohexenylene, piperidine-1,4-diyl, naphthalene-2,6-diyl, etc.; A4 is one defined in A1-A3 or may be a single bond when n is 0, Z1 and Z2 are each COO, CH2O, CH2CH2, etc.; m is 1-3, n is 0-2 and Q is CO, O or S).
EXAMPLE: 4-(4-trans-pentylcyclohexyl)-4'-(trifluoromethyl)biphenyl.
USE: A liquid crystal compd.
PROCESS: For example, a thioaryl compd. is reacted with trifluoroiodomethane under conditions fitted to Reimer-Tieman reaction between phenol and chloroform to obtain an aryltrifluoromethyl ether compd.
