PURPOSE: To obtain a new dihydronaphthalene-based compound useful as a liquid crystal composition for liquid displays, etc., and excellent in stability of a nematic phase, physicochemical stability, low viscosity and refractive index anisotropy.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I [R1 is a (substrated) 1-14C alkyl; R2 and R3 are each H, a halogen or R2 and R3 together form O; R4 is an electron-attracting group; Q1 and Q2 are each a single bond, an ether bond or a (thio) ester bond; when n is o, Q2 is a single bond or a reverse ester bond; l and m are each 1 or 2; n is 0-2; a mark of formula II is a single bond or a double bond and when the mark is a double bond, R3 does not exist], e.g. 6-(4-n-pentylphenylethynyl)-1-tetralone. This compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a compound of formula III with a compound of formula IV.
