Abstract:
NEW MATERIAL: A compd. represented by formula I (wherein R1 forms a hydrolyzable ether hydroxy protective group together with a bonded oxygen atom thereof).
EXAMPLE: Racemic-5-[2.5-bis(acetyloxy)-3,4,6-trimethylphenyl]-3-methyl-1-pentyn-3- ol.
USE: This new material is useful in the production of optically active natural vitamin E.
PROCESS: A compd. represented by formula II (wherein R4 is phenyl or phenyl substituted with 1-3 halogen) is hydrolyzed and further cyclized to be converted to a compd. represented by formula III through etherification and this compd. and a compd. represented by formula IV (wherein X is halogen or a leaving group) are condensed to obtain the compd. represented by the formula I.
