To provide a dimmer capable of enhancing an extinction rate in a state that a light-shielding member is closed even when lenses constituting a lens array are arranged at odd-numbered rows in a direction in which the light-shielding member is opened and closed, and further to provide a projector.
A dimmer 10 comprises a pair of light-shielding portions 60a and 60b that: extends along both sides of a direction, Y direction, substantially perpendicular to an illumination light axis OA; rotates about rotational axes 52ax and 52bx of which axial directions are set in the substantially perpendicular direction; blocks light beams emitted from a first lens array 311 and adjusts an amount of passing light; and is disposed with the illumination light axis OA interposed therebetween. The first lens array 311 includes a lens 311a disposed at positions where the center of the lens 311a is substantially positioned on the illumination light axis OA. As viewed from an illumination light axis OA side, the first lens array 311 is disposed at a position where the center of the lens 311a is not overlapped with a gap D1 interposed between end portions 64a and 64b of illumination light axis OA sides of the pair of light-shielding portions 60a and 60b.
