To realize preferable stratified combustion in a direct cylinder injection spark-ignition engine by leading a stratified gas mixture near to its spark plug.
A piston is formed in its crown with a cavity 8 situated offset from the center thereof toward intake valves 6A and 6B. A spark plug 9 is arranged above a circumferential part of the cavity 8 near the piston center. A fuel injection valve 10 is directed into the cavity 8 from the side of the intake valves 6A and 6B. One intake port 5A out of two is mounted therein with a swirl control valve 11 adapted to close under specified engine running conditions, while the other intake port 5B is arranged tangentially in respect of the cavity 8 at an inward angle θ1 to the horizontal direction of cross flows.
