PURPOSE: To allow a predetermined internal latent image type direct positive silver halide emulsion to less depend on processing, have a high S/N ratio and be contrasty by forming the silver halide phase of an outer shell in an atmosphere where a pBr value is specified.
CONSTITUTION: In an internal latent image type direct positive silver halide emulsion which contains, by 50% or more of all silver halide particles, flake silver halide particles with an average particle diameter of 0.3μm or more and an aspect ratio of 2 to 100 inclusive, the silver halide phase of an outer shell is formed in an atmosphere where a pBr value is 1.8-3.6, preferably 2.2-3.0. The silver halide phase of the outer shell is also formed in the presence of at least one kind of compound selected from those represented by the formulae. In the formulae, R, R1, R2 may be the same or different and represent an aliphatic group, an aromatic group, or a heterocyclic group, M represents a cation, L represents a divalent bond, and (m) represents 0 or 1.
