PURPOSE: To display the fact when a disc is defective with a flaw, dust, etc., by comparing a peak hold value of a reproducing signal with a predetermined reference level.
CONSTITUTION: When the light is cast to a surface of a rotating optical disc in an optical disc player, a reflecting light is detected thereby to generate a reproducing signal (RF signal). A disc failure display device 10 is set in the optical disc player. A peak hold circuit 11 constituting the device 10 takes a peak hold value of the RF signal, and a comparator circuit (comparator) 12 compares the peak hold value with a predetermined reference level. Based on an output signal from the comparison circuit 12, a control circuit (CPU) 13 outputs a display signal when the peak hold value is not higher than the reference level. A display part 14 displays by the display signal from the CPU 13 that the disc is defective.
