To obtain an aqueous coating composition in which a solid, especially a pigment, is adequately dispersed by using a suitable dispersant.
An aqueous composition comprises a dispersed solid by using as a dispersant a water-soluble polyisocyanate addition product containing a hydrophilic polyether chain and having a maximum isocyanate group content of 1.0 wt.% and an ethylene oxide content of 30-80 wt.% (a molecular weight of 44). The polyisocyanate addition product is a reaction product of (A) a polyisocyanate component, (B) one or more monohydric polyether alcohols with a molecular weight of 150-5,000 and an ethylene oxide content of 50-99.5 wt.%, (C) one or more monohydric alcohols with a molecular weight of 32-5,000, (D) an amine component comprising a tertiary amine and (E) one or more compounds with a molecular weight of 32-3,000 and at least two isocyanate reactive groups to produce a urethane group and optionally, a urea group.
