To provide a displacement detection apparatus which, even when a slip occurs in paper being transferred, can detect its amount of slip and detect the paper length and skew accurately.
The displacement detection apparatus comprises a light emitting section 44 for irradiating the surface of the paper being transferred with laser light originating from a laser light source 45 and a light receiving section 47 having an image sensor 48 which receives laser light reflected off the surface of the paper within a fixed area B on which the laser light is irradiated, reads an interference fringe pattern imaged, and converts it into an electric signal. A controller 50 to which the electric signal of the interference fringe pattern is input is connected to the light receiving section 47. The image sensor 48 reads the interference fringe pattern within the fixed area B of the paper P being periodically transferred. The controller 50 compares the positions of common parts T1, T2 of a plurality of interference fringe patterns read by the image sensor 48 periodically to calculate the amount of displacement of the paper.
