To provide a display apparatus capable of preventing mis-discharge and a method for driving a display panel.
The display panel formed with pixel cells consisting of first discharge cells and second discharge cells provided with a light shielding layer at crossover parts of a plurality of row electrodes and column electrodes each bearing display lines, is driven as follows. That is, in an address period Ww of a head sub-field SF1 in one field display period, while applying a scanning base voltage BP+ with a predetermined first potential to each one row electrode in all the row electrode pairs, a potential SP of the same polarity as this first potential is sequentially superimposed on each one row electrode, and also write-in address discharge is made to occur in the second discharge cells by applying a potential proportional to a pixel data to the column electrodes. in this case, the potential of one row electrodes is gradually lowered from the above first potential when the address period is ended T1.
