To make information the form of numbers or the like and its background bright for visibility on a display device for sue with an electronic clock or the like and to provide a variety of information to viewers and draw their attention by varying the background.
The display device includes elements such as a polarizing plate 11, a liquid crystal panel 8, and a polarization separating film 12. The film 12 has the function of allowing a linearly polarized light beam in a certain direction (shown by the arrow Q) to pass through, while reflecting other linearly polarized light beams (shown by the arrow P). A pattern 20 of logos, marks, or characters is printed on a light reflecting layer 18a disposed on the back of the film 12. Information in the form of numbers or the like (shown by the arrows P) is not displayed on a monotone background without patterns, but can be displayed along with a pattern 20 of characters or the like (shown by the arrow Q) as its background.
