To provide a display device whose brightness is high, which can cope with high definition, whose manufacturing cost is reduced and whose power consumption is low.
A rear transparent electrode 15 is formed on a transparent display substrate 14 and an optical transistor 19 is formed extending over a whole display area. Besides, a display light emitting element 12 is constituted by forming an organic EL display layer 23 on the transistor 19 and forming a front transparent electrode 24 on the layer 23. A writing light emitting element 13 emitting light for writing according to the respective pixels of the element 12 is arranged at the bak part of the element 12. Thus, since such structure that the transistor 19 having a switching function does not exert an effect on the numerical aperture of the pixels is obtained, the high numerical aperture is attained. Besides, since it is enough that the transistor 19 and the layer 23 are formed only extending over the display area, the device is easily manufactured.
