Abstract:

PURPOSE: To control an electro-optical device with a digital signal, to reduce the influence of variance due to differences in characteristics among elements, and to obtain many gradations by generating voltage pulses to be applied to respective picture elements from plural pulses which have multi-stage wave height and continuance.
CONSTITUTION: A gradational display is made by utilizing the mean effective voltage of pulse voltages and a signal processor varies the height of the pulses in addition to the pulse width. Namely, the time of the voltage pulses applied to respective pixel electrodes and the level of the voltage are digitally controlled to generate a composite pulse which has plural voltage values and pulse width in one frame of an image. The mean effective voltage of one frame of the image is set to an optional value to display half-tone colors on liquid crystal as a result. Consequently, the image which has many gradations is obtained.
