To determine the distance between a sensor and an object using the simplest and most reliable method to the utmost, by using a photoelectronic sensor following the principle of a triangulation method, independently of any error source.
The sensor 11 has one or more measuring channels between a transmission unit (S1; S) for emitting an electromagnetic sensitive beam to a measuring region and a reception unit (E; E1) for detecting the sensitive beam reflected and/or returned from the measuring region. The sensor 11 has one or more added channels, having one more transmission unit S2 and/or one more reception unit E2 other than the transmission unit (S1; S) and the reception unit (E; E1), and evaluates cooperatively received signals of the measuring channels and the added channels, in order to determine the object distance D.
