NEW MATERIAL: A compd. represented by formula I [wherein A is (branched) alkanediyl; R is H, (substd.) alkyl, or (substd.) phenyl; R1 is H, halogen, CN, or CF3; R2 and R4 are each H or halogen; R3 is halogen, CF3, OCF3, SCF3, etc.; X is N or CR5 (wherein R5 is R2 or R4); Y is O or S; and Z is a group represented by formula II (wherein R6 is H, alkyl, etc.; and (n) is 0 or 1) or formula III (wherein R7 is H or alkyl; and R8 is R7, etc.)].
EXAMPLE: [7-(2,6-dichloro-4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)naphthalen-2-yl-oxy]acetone.
USE: A herbicide, exhibiting good results in selective control of dicotyly weeds in monocotyly and dicotyly cultured plants such as crops and rice plants.
PROCESS: For instance, a compd. represented by formula IV is reacted with an alkylating agent represented by formula V (wherein X1 is halogen) and, when Z is O, with a dimethylacetal or ketal compd., if necessary in the presence of an acid acceptor and a solvent, to give a compd. represented by formula I.
