Abstract:

To obtain the subject new DNA fragment useful for the production of an enzyme for the biosynthesis of alkanes and capable of encoding a protein, containing a specific amino acid sequence and having fatty aldehyde decarbonylase activities and obtaining, etc., of a transformed plant capable of manifesting an altered epicuticular wax composition.

This new DNA fragment is capable of encoding a protein comprising an amino acid sequence depicted by the formula or a protein, substantially homologous therewith and involved in fatty decarboxylase activities and is useful for the production of a protein, involved in the biosynthesis of alkanes and having the fatty aldehyde decarbonylase activities and obtaining, etc., of a transformed plant capable of manifesting an altered epicuticular wax composition. The DNA fragment is obtained by extracting an mRNA from a tissue of a stem, a fruit, etc., of Arabidopsis thaliana according to a conventional method, preparing a cDNA library using the extracted mRNA and then screening the resultant cDNA library with a probe comprising a part of a gene capable of encoding a protein involved in the fatty aldehyde decarbonylase activities.
