The number of steps of a stepping motor for conveying the ink ribbon which has been driven between the waveforms of the repeating waveforms of HIGH level and LOW level formed according to the ink ribbon travelling transmitted from a ribbon sensor is counted. Only when the number of drive steps counted coincides with a preset specific number of steps, the travelling of the ink ribbon is judged to be normal.
